About This Place

Nestled in the heart of Westport, CT, Basso Restaurant & Wine Bar is a Mediterranean gem where the vibrant flavors of the region come alive with sophistication and warmth. Specializing in an inspired array of small plates, Neapolitan-style pizzas, and handcrafted pastas, Basso delivers a dining experience that feels both elevated and inviting, perfect for intimate evenings or lively gatherings.

The menu at Basso is a treasure trove of culinary craftsmanship. Start your meal with the Baby Carrots with Smoked Romesco, where roasted, hand-peeled carrots meet a smoky almond-rich Romesco sauce, balancing earthiness with subtle heat in every bite. If you crave a savory crunch, the pan-seared Brussels Sprouts, seasoned simply with sea salt and extra virgin olive oil, are a fresh, addictive companion. Seafood lovers will revel in the Calamares A La Plancha—calamari sautéed to tender perfection with olive oil, garlic, and cracked pepper, exuding a delicately charred aroma that whets the appetite.

No Mediterranean meal at Basso would be complete without indulging in their signature Neapolitan pizzas. The Pizza Funghi enchants with wild mushrooms, caramelized onions, creamy goat cheese, and a drizzle of luxurious black truffle oil, creating a harmony of earthy, sweet, and umami flavors. For a spicy, bold twist, the Pizza Casablanca stuns with San Marzano tomatoes, mozzarella, sun-dried tomatoes, an olive mix, and fiery hot cherry peppers that awaken the palate. Lovers of classic Italian textures and tastes will find comfort in the authentic Pizza Margherita, with its luscious buffalo mozzarella and fresh basil, kissed by extra virgin olive oil.

The pasta and specialties are thoughtfully crafted—highlighted by dishes like the Chicken Scarpariello Cavatelli: tender cavatelli tossed in a vibrant lemon sauce with hot cherry peppers and white wine, crowned by Parmigiano Reggiano. For a luxurious main course, the Alaskan Halibut is a masterpiece, pan-seared and presented over a rich lobster bisque, garnished with crisp potato chips for added texture.

What truly makes Basso shine is the consistently flawless execution paired with an atmosphere that is both trendy and relaxing. Guests describe it as a serene yet lively space that feels meticulously curated without any hint of pretension. The warm, attentive service adds a personal touch, making every visit feel like a special occasion.

Longtime patrons, like Lisa Belton, have praised Chef Renato’s ability to keep the menu exciting after 15 years, noting that every dish is “perfectly prepared and generously portioned.” Others rave about the standout pizzas and tapas, with highs for dishes like hanger steak, potatoes brava, and empanadas, which are made with equal parts passion and finesse. Whether you’re there for a romantic date or a festive company outing, Basso’s accommodating staff and inviting vibe create an unforgettable dining experience that Westport diners eagerly return to time and again.

In every detail—from ingredient quality and presentation to the thoughtfully curated wine list—Basso Restaurant & Wine Bar exemplifies Mediterranean dining at its finest, leaving a lasting impression on your senses and your soul.

I have been a customer of Basso Restaurant and Wine Bar since they opened. This is hands down my favorite restaurant, and that has not changed in 15 years. Chef Renato keeps the menu exciting and fresh and I have never ordered a dish I did not absolutely love. Everything is consistently perfectly prepared and generously portioned. The atmosphere is relaxing and trendy, and the service never disappoints. I cannot recommend Basso enough.

We chose to spend New Year’s Eve here, and it couldn’t have been a better decision. Mario, our server, greeted us with a warm smile and impressed us with his extensive knowledge of the menu, recommending standout dishes like the hanger steak and potato tapas, which were absolutely incredible. Despite the lively energy of the night, he remained calm, attentive, and made sure our experience was nothing short of exceptional. The espresso martini and blossom martini are simply outstanding – a must-try for any visit!

This is one of my favorite spots in Westport. The ambiance is serene and beautifully curated—perfect for intimate dinner dates or cozy gatherings with friends. The space feels both elegant and inviting. The halibut was exceptionally flavorful and perfectly seasoned, paired with vegetables that were cooked to perfection. My personal favorites were the Potatoes Brava and the sautéed Brussels sprouts—both dishes were vibrant and delicious. The staff truly went above and beyond. Their attentiveness and kindness made the experience feel special, especially when they surprised me with an unexpected order someone had called in just for me. That thoughtful gesture made my evening unforgettable.

I have adored Basso for years! The tapas are amazing and easy to share, the presentation and quality of the food is fantastic, and the atmosphere is wonderful! There's not a single miss on the menu, and they easily have the best pizza in Connecticut! Service is very friendly and very attentive! Had a wonderful time on our recent date here, one of the best in Westport for sure!

I chose Basso for a company outing of about 20 people and it was perfect. Management was super accommodating, flexible, and communicative leading up to the event. Guests really loved the pizza, the empanadas, and the potatoes brava! Drinks were delicious as well. The staff stayed after closing to allow us more time to mingle which we really appreciated. Service from Ela and Adrianna was top tier. Overall - they went above and beyond and I really couldn’t recommend them more!

Came here for a late lunch. It was a bit tricky to find as Google Maps told me to park at least a full five plus minute walk..but there wasn'tany parking where maps was telling me to park.... so we got there super late for our reservation. But once we did find it, we were glad that we did. We tried theses tapas: papas brava , spinach & chickpea, eggplant [something], and another non-vegan entrée which the last two items looked good... (but I didn't personally try them but it looked delish! My friend LOVED them!) I DID try the vegan paella & it was very tasty..I was so pleasantly surprised that they actually had it! Yumm!!!

Deff recommend !!! Food was good, the tres leche dessert had a funny taste to it, nothing a cappuccino won’t fix. I also didn’t love the actual gnocchi texture but the sauce it was in….. delicious. Pizza was top tier, very yummy. My husband liked his plate but said the chicken was a little on the dry side, but still loved it. Service was the best part, everyone was so nice. Will go again !

Such a great find! Their menu is the perfect mix of Italian tradition and Latin flavor. Chef Renato Donzelli brings his Venezuelan roots and Italian upbringing together in a menu that seriously impresses! Everything I had was amazing, especially the octopus salad in a bread bowl (so fresh and delicious). Do yourself a favor and be sure order the paella as well. Their espresso martinis were some of the best I’ve had, and the desserts (cannoli cake and churros) were the perfect finish. On top of it all, the romantic vibe makes this such a great spot for date night.
